VEGAN BEAUTY AT SIGMA
We believe animal products have no place on your face. Luckily there are steps you can take to be a more conscious, animal-friendly consumer, so we’re suggesting ways our customers can incorporate a vegan lifestyle into their beauty routine.
So why is it so important for us to have vegan-friendly products? First, it’s what we believe in. Our co-founder Dr. Simone Xavier is an animal-lover and veterinarian who believes using animal products is a thing of the past. Second, vegan makeup is better for you, our customer, and we’ll show you why.
What does it mean for a product to be vegan? Put simply, it means there is an absence of animal ingredients in our products.
An example of how many of our makeup products avoid animal ingredients is that we refrain from using ingredients like animal oils, musks, and fats which are commonly used by other companies to smooth or hydrate skin.
As for our brushes, we do not use natural bristles, which are often made of sable, horse manes/tails, goat, mink, or squirrel hair. The hairs used in natural brushes are typically collected by shearing animals which can lead to life-threatening cuts on the animals, or they can be obtained by collecting hair fallout from animals kept in captivity and living in small pens. Some natural bristles are also obtained after the animal is killed.
Instead, Sigma Beauty uses SigmaTech® and Sigmax® fibers which are completely synthetic and designed to mimic animal hair. These fibers are made of manmade materials like nylon and polyester fibers, so there are absolutely no animals involved in the creation of our brushes, making them totally vegan.
Many times, terms like “cruelty-free” pop up when it comes to vegan products, but cruelty-free and vegan are not one and the same. Cruelty-free refers to products that haven’t been tested on animals. That means it’s possible for products to be vegan but not cruelty-free and vice versa.
Our brushes and brush care products happen to be both vegan and cruelty-free. You can check for the PETA vegan logo to indicate that your brushes are both vegan and cruelty-free. Plus, you can feel good knowing all Sigma products are cruelty-free!
Our skin absorbs up to 60% of the products we apply to it, so being conscious of what we put on our skin can really level up our beauty routine.
For those with sensitive or allergy prone skin, it can be beneficial to opt for vegan ingredients to help avoid breakouts, rashes, and unwanted redness.
Many animal products like musks, fats, and oils can clog pores and be more prone to causing allergic reactions. Many vegan, plant-based ingredients have more of a soothing effect. That’s why we formulate many of our makeup products with vitamin E, jojoba oils, sunflower seed oil, and other plant-based ingredients.
The same goes for brushes. Because non-vegan makeup brushes are made from animal hair, natural brushes are not hypoallergenic and can cause a variety of allergic reactions.
Vegan and synthetic brushes (like ours!) are great for those with allergies because they don’t have many of the common irritants that natural bristles have.
While vegan cosmetic products are better for our animal friends and for our skin, there are some purely practical benefits, too. A great example of this is how our vegan brushes stand up to non-vegan brushes over time. Plus, if you’re not quite ready to give up your favorite non-vegan makeup products, switching to vegan brushes is a great start.
Our brushes are known for being virtually indestructible, really, they’ve been run over by cars and they still won’t break. But when it comes to everyday use, that’s where our brushes shine.
Natural brushes won’t last long. The bristles can dry out after multiple washes (and you should be washing your brushes regularly!). This can cause them to become brittle, making makeup application more difficult.
Shedding is also common in natural brushes. Natural fibers do not work well with glues or bonding agents and they have a tendency to expand and contract when exposed to humidity (think of your bathroom after a shower).
Many who use natural brushes throw them out after a couple uses because they start to break down so soon. The lifespan of natural brushes is only about 1 to 5 years, even less without proper care. This can cost consumers time and money when they’re constantly needing to purchase new brushes.
Because our brushes are made with high-quality synthetic bristles, they won’t dry out and become brittle. They can withstand multiple washes much better than natural brushes and remain soft for longer. With Sigma Beauty brushes, shedding is virtually non-existent. The manmade materials work better with glues and bonding agents so your bristles will stay intact. You can wash your brushes as often as you want without the breakage.
For those who are thinking about sustainability, long-lasting brushes are the way to go. With regular cleaning and brush care, our brushes can last a lifetime. That means fewer brushes ending up in the landfill.
When it comes to applying makeup, you want to have a nonporous brush. Animal based bristles are extremely porous and can absorb your makeup, leading to wasted product and plenty of build-up on your brushes. Natural bristles also have a tendency to harbor bacteria, dirt, and oil, which commonly lead to breakouts. And we know how frustrating dirty brushes can be!
Luckily, synthetic brushes dodge many of these issues by being nonporous. They won’t absorb or waste your makeup and they’re not as good of an environment for bacteria growth as natural brushes. By switching over to vegan bristle brushes, you can say help minimize wasted product and skin irritation or breakouts.
At Sigma Beauty we love to talk about cleaning brushes. However, natural brushes are difficult to clean. Because they’re so porous, liquid and cream products can be absorbed into the bristles leading to time consuming, rigorous cleaning which can lead to breakage.
Our easy to clean synthetic fibers respond well to brush cleansers and water exposure, making cleaning hardly a task at all. When makeup and bacteria is not absorbed into your brushes, cleaning can be quick and easy, which is something we all appreciate!
Let’s talk aesthetics, yes there are concerns over how long your brushes last and how easy they are to clean, but at the end of the day, many of us just want a product that does what it’s supposed to do. And for us, that’s flawless makeup application.
Natural brushes are limited to pairing with only certain products like powder formulas and rarely provide a seamless finish with liquid or cream products. With liquid products, makeup application can look streaky, patching, and lack full coverage.
Our synthetic bristles are much more versatile when it comes to product application. Our brushes are suitable for powder, cream, and liquid formulas, so you can keep using your favorite products without worrying if it’ll damage your brushes.
Vegan brushes also provide a more uniform application since their bristles stay softer longer and are less prone to losing their shape. If you’re looking for a product that gets the job done, synthetic bristles are the way to go.
