Meet the total beauty boss behind our business partner Cosmetics Obsession
From Law to lipstick! The owner of Cosmetics Obsession shares with us how she followed her passion, changed her life and built her beauty business in Switzerland.
My name is Laura. I have a master’s degree in law, so I was not really destined to own a cosmetics store. But beauty had always been my passion ever since I was a kid, and I was spending way more time trying new makeup products than trying to improve my legal skills. After several trips to the USA and watching a lot of makeup tutorials on YouTube (what a revolution back then!), I discovered a whole new world with a ton of brands we didn’t have access to. This is how I got my idea: importing and selling these amazing brands in Switzerland!
Q: Tell us about your business, and how you started it. Or, tell us about your position.
A: In 2013, I decided to change my life completely. I quit my job and gave myself 6 months to have a running online store. The first brand I added was Sigma Beauty. I now have a brick-and-mortar store in Lausanne with 4 employees. This year marks the 8th year of our collaboration and I am still amazed by the quality of Sigma Beauty’s products.
Q: Who do you look up to for inspiration or mentorship?
A: I don’t have a particular mentor, but I am inspired every day by other women who built their own companies from scratch - whether it’s in the cosmetics industry, clothing, food or even services. Seeing that other people tried things and had the courage to do it gives me strength.
Q: What is the best advice you can give someone? Or, what is one piece of advice you would give yourself 5 years ago?
A: You’ll fail and suck at things. Jump back up, and fail again until you get it right. The path to success and freedom is not a straight road, there will be bumps even if you are the best in your field. There are so many factors, so the only thing you can control is your attitude towards the events and the response you give. Always stay focused on your end goal.
Q: What are your habits/methods for success? What is the biggest factor that has helped you be successful?
A: Reading and always learning. Since the beginning I started reading books about self discipline, setting goals, business, retail, e-commerce...I had no background in this field and didn’t know anyone who had, so I wanted to learn all I could. Reading and learning is still one of my priorities today.
