Desirae’s love for makeup started at a young age - an interesting experience given that she and her mother were complete opposites when it came to wearing makeup. According to Desirae, her mother never wore makeup or took part in a skincare regimen. At the time her interest in makeup began, Desirae’s aunt sold Mary Kay products. Desirae loved exploring different products and playing around with different brands. 

 

Following her passion, she worked with Clinique in college, then went on to pursue her esthetician license. She also has a background in education and uses her knowledge to teach women everyday tips, tricks and techniques for makeup. Desirae has been a Retailer Partner with Sigma Beauty since 2018. Q: Tell us about your background.

A: I have been working in the cosmetic industry for about 14 years now. I have worked for multiple brands and was a traveling educator for one of them as well. I decided to go back to school and become a licensed esthetician to further my love and knowledge for the skin. Prior to owning my own business, I managed a cosmetic store for 8 years and then ventured off on my own. I have had my business for 3 years now in downtown Bismarck.

 

Q: What is your why? 

A: My why is my family. I have a 2-and-a-half-year-old son and one making its arrival in a few weeks. My son has been coming to work with me since he was 4 weeks old and when the new baby comes I will do the same. I want them to see their mama work hard daily to achieve my goals and grow this business each and every day. My husband says I am one of the most hardworking and devoted people he knows. So, I try and live up to those expectations as well. I wanted to be able to raise a family but still spend time with my kids and this business has allowed me to do that.

Q: What makes your company different?

A: Customers really receive a great one-on-one experience when they come in here. I strive to be extremely knowledgeable about the products, so that I can cater to exactly what they are needing. I try to know my customers by their first name and even remember some of the shades and products that they use. Building that relationship with my customers is key for me.

 

Q: What is your biggest achievement?
A: Taking the leap of faith and not letting fear get to me when I decided to open my own business. Having my highest year in sales despite going through a pandemic this past year.

Q: What makes you feel the most beautiful?
A: A full face of makeup and hair curled always helps - but taking care of myself mentally & physically, so I can be the best wife, mama, and business owner that I can be.

Q: What is the best advice you can give someone?
A: As far as my advice for venturing off and starting your own business....just do it!! It was the best decision I ever made and there is nothing better than being your own boss. By being my own boss, I am able to make decisions like bringing my boys to work with me, so they can see their mom working her butt off for them because they are my why. Running a business full-time and being both a stay-at-home and working mom is challenging at moments but so worth it.
